Tutor Selection and Vetting process

Tutor Selection and Vetting process

Southern Tutors® has well established procedures for registering all of its private tutors.

Our specialist educational team of qualified teachers and experienced tutors conducts a number of checks on each tutor before they can successfully register with us. All tutors must hold a current Enhanced DBS check that is less than three years old, before they are fully registered.

Below is the process all tutors go through:

  • Interview
  • Documents checked
  • Enhanced DBS check
  • References checked
  • Ongoing assessment

This initial discussion enables us to establish what qualifications the tutor holds and what specific tuition experience they have. Southern Tutors® requires all tutors to hold a good university degree in the subject that they are tutoring and/or have Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). All tutors must have up to date knowledge of the curriculum.

Documents checked

Once the application forms have been received, the tutor's personal details are double checked. Our educational team, who are qualified teachers, also receive copies of the tutor's degree certificates, application form and current Enhanced DBS check. If they do not hold an Enhanced DBS check, an application is made. All the documents are inspected and if satisfactory, the tutor's work referees are contacted.

Enhanced DBS check

All our private tutors hold Enhanced DBS checks, previously called Criminal Record Bureau Disclosures (CRBs).

The Disclosure and Barring Service is an executive of the Home Office, which vets people who want to work with children and vulnerable people.

References checked

Our Educational Director assesses two references for every tutor. The work referees can confirm the applicant's teaching ability. If the references reach our high standards, the tutor is registered.

Ongoing Assessment

At Southern Tutors® our assessment process is continuous.

Our careful selection process ensures we have very few unsuitable tutors but, in the rare cases encountered, we do not use the tutor again.

Clients pay for lessons as they are taken and are able to ring us and ask for a replacement tutor if they feel the tutor is not suitable. This can happen merely because of personality clashes and clients should feel confident they can change tutors wherever we have a suitable replacement. Our careful matching of student and tutor, by experienced, qualified teachers, ensures lessons are productive and stimulating.
